7 Most Common Causes of Joint Pain

Joint pain is a relatively common issue. It can be acute or chronic, mild or severe, somewhere in between. There are many different causes for joint pain, so we’re going to run through the 7 most common causes of joint pain.

1. Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative inflammatory condition that occurs with age. The cartilage that cushions your joints breaks down, causing joint pain and stiffness in your joints.

2. Rheumatoid Arthritis

RA is an autoimmune condition where your immune system mistakenly attacks the lining of your joints. As a result, Rheumatoid Arthritis causes your joints to become inflamed, swollen, and in pain.

3. Sprains and Strains

These are common joint injuries that cause swelling and pain. A sprain is extreme stretching or tearing of a ligament. A strain is stretching or tearing of a tendon or muscle.

4. Bursitis

Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa/bursae, which are cushions between bones and soft tissue. It’s most common in joints like shoulders, knees, and elbows that experience repetitive motion.

5. Viral Infections

When experiencing a viral infection, especially with fever, joint pain is a common symptom. Certain viruses include mumps, the flu, and hepatitis.

6. Tendinitis

Tendonitis is aggravation and inflammation of the tendons. It’s usually caused by repetitive activity in the joints like the shoulders, knees, and elbows.

7. Gout

Gout is a condition where crystal deposits form in the joints. It’s most common in your big toe.
